Shooting with Mike Colon

So I did a workshop with Mike Colon last Friday in NYC and it was pretty awesome. We photographed models, a table design and he explained how he shoots photos that try to look like exactly what he sees at an event. It is something I try to do, with some exceptions (I love my sunset-off-camera-flash-photos,) but I only use flash when really needed. Anyway here are my photos from the workshop, the tablescape for Angela Caba Designs is under wraps!

Mike Colon Workshop, Trump SoHo.

On Friday I spent the afternoon with Mike Colon and Angela Caba Designs at Trump Soho. It was a small workshop held by Mike before he geared up to shoot Bridal Market Week in Manhattan. Here is a little preview, look for a bigger post on Wednesday.

The Bride's Hands

This is a photo I first remember seeing my wife take. She crouched down and pointed her 50mm lens at  a bride's hand while the bride was getting her dress laced up in the back. It was a brilliant photo and I have been copying her ever since. Wedding photographers usually do a ring photo, usually with a macro lens and sometimes with the rings on the happy couples hands. I still make that photo trying for something unique each time as I want my couples to have "their" photo not someone elses. But everytime I take a photo like these, I think... that's a Kate photo.

Instant Gratification

I love shooting digital for one reason... instant gratification. I love getting to show the bride her portrait right after I take it, showing the groomsmen that their group shot looks like an album cover, and letting the parents know that my group family photos came out better than Uncle Bob's!

I was at a bridal show yesterday talking with another photographer about what we love and hate about current camera systems and I said to him I love shooting digital. He said that all of my pics "look" like film. The truth is, I love film, there is a soul in it that I love to recreate on the computer by slightly manipulating those RAW files. It's just not cost effective for me or my clients to shoot film.

I''m not sure why I'm bringing this up to everyone I was just thinking of this photo yesterday that my wife took at a wedding this past summer. If I was shooting film, I wouldn't have been able to see this.

The Fly Shutter

Did you know I am also a fly fishing photographer? I have been published online on This is Fly, The Fiberglass Manifesto, and mentioned on Lo Fi Fly, Moldy Chum and Le Mouching. Not bad for a Jersey guy. But it all got stepped up a notch because the next isuue of The Fly Fish Journal has myself as the featured photographer! Click that link then head out and buy an issue! Be sure to check me out at www.theflyshutter.tumblr.com and buy custom prints at www.theflyshutter.com.

Gwendolyn turns 11!

Gwendolyn at 18 months and Gwen last month. We tease her and call her Gwenie, Gwenifer Pennington, Penny, and we use to call her Grendel. Now she often goes by Number 1 (of 4). Thanks for making us a family Gwen.
